Gluten Allergies

Gluten Allergies Can Restrict The Menu

Some people have gluten allergies, and these allergies can seriously restrict the foods that these people can consume. Gluten allergies can produce a serious reaction for these people if they eat anything that contains gluten. People with gluten allergies often get sick from eating food containing gluten, but they usually do not know what the problem is because the food that they eat is not called gluten. Gluten is a substance that is present in many different types of food. A person might eat a cereal without the knowledge that this contains gluten. The person then has a reaction because they ate the cereal that contained gluten.

Gluten allergies are a reaction to a rubbery substance that is in wheat, rye, barley and some oats. Gluten helps the processing of these grains into bread and other foods. People who eat foods made from these grains and have a reaction might have a gluten allergy although they could be allergic to other substances as well. In order to avoid these reactions, a person who suspects that they have gluten allergies should consult a doctor who specializes in allergies. These doctors should be able to conduct tests for allergies in order to narrow the source of the allergy.

Gluten Allergies Produce Several Symptoms

The symptoms of a gluten allergy can differ in severity for the people affected. Some people have worse reactions than others. The symptoms of this allergy include hives, cramps, vomiting, swelling and nausea. Many people have awful reactions to gluten, but this allergy could be fatal for some people. Gluten is present in so many different foods that it is difficult to identify the allergy without proper tests to determine the source of the allergy. People who experience these symptoms should consult with a doctor. The doctor will be able to identify the allergy with a simple test.

People with a gluten allergy should find out which foods contain gluten. People with a slight allergy might try to avoid eating too many foods with gluten. People that have a severe reaction will have to avoid these foods completely. Some allergy shots are available that will help people avoid a reaction to gluten. Sometimes children have a gluten allergy that they outgrow as adults. A person with this allergy can educate themselves on the foods with gluten. The regulations that require an itemized list of all the ingredients in a food product is very helpful to those with gluten allergies because the label will show gluten and warn people to avoid it.
