Egg Allergies

Living With Egg Allergies

Read the ingredients on the back of a few food product containers, and you begin to realize what a pain it must be for people living with egg allergies. Some products might contain no egg products on their lists of ingredients, but rather provide a disclaimer that certain ingredients are manufactured on the same equipment used to process eggs, which, one might think, would cause those suffering from egg allergies to avoid that product.

Symptoms Associated With Egg Allergies

While many different food allergies can have common symptoms, those who suffer from egg allergies might notice a few more specific symptoms, such as eczema, hives, migraine headaches, and asthma. If egg is a big part of your diet and you suffer frequently from any of these symptoms, then it is a good idea to see your doctor. Your doctor will probably send you to an allergist, who can perform a skin or blood test that can help determine if you suffer from an egg allergy. In some cases the allergist may require you to remove all egg products from your diet for a specified time period, then reintroduce them under supervision. If the symptoms return upon reintroduction, you most likely suffer from an egg allergy.

What To Do

The most important thing people suffering from egg allergies must do is remove all egg products from their diets. This can be much more difficult than it sounds due to the number of products that require eggs or egg products for use as ingredients. People with egg allergies have to read the label on everything they buy and be ready to ask questions every time they go out to a restaurant, or they will be at risk of eating the wrong thing.

Not all those with egg allergies suffer serious reactions after ingesting egg products. Sometimes a mild skin rash or watery eyes is all that will occur, but for those who do suffer the more serious reactions, the consequences can be much worse, and may even result in death. In these serious cases the sufferer should always carry medication, such as epinephrine or corticosteroid, in case of emergency.

As with all allergy sufferers, those of us with egg allergies can live healthy lives if we use the necessary diligence when it comes to monitoring the foods we eat. Luckily, there are numerous resources we can utilize to assist us in learning how to live with egg allergies, from our doctors to various sites on the Internet.
